第33章 "Shattered Trust"

星际猎人

**The 33rd Chapter: Fractured Alliance**

Lemuel's anger still simmered, his mind reeling from the revelation. He couldn't believe Nova had kept such a monumental secret from him. Their bond, once strong and unbreakable, now seemed to be fraying at the seams.

"I thought we were partners, Nova," Lemuel's voice was low and even, but the words dripped with venom. "How could you keep this from me?"

Nova's eyes dropped, her gaze plummeting to the floor. "I didn't want to burden you, Lemuel. I didn't want to lose your trust."

Lemuel's laughter was bitter. "You've already lost it, Nova. And it's not just because of this." He spat the words. "It's because I feel like I don't even know you anymore."

Nova's voice was barely audible. "You don't know me, Lemuel. You never have."

The words cut deep, and Lemuel's anger turned to pain. He felt like he'd been punched in the gut. How could Nova say such a thing? Didn't she know that he loved her, that he'd given her his heart?

But before he could respond, the comms system beeped, breaking the tense silence. "Incoming transmission from the Galactic Union," the AI's voice was neutral.

Lemuel's gaze flicked to Nova, and for a moment, their eyes locked. He could see the fear lurking in her eyes, the same fear that had driven her to keep her secret hidden.

"Answer it," Lemuel said, his voice cold and detached.

Nova nodded, her movements mechanical. She took a deep breath and stepped forward, her hand hovering over the comms panel.

The transmission flickered to life, and a stern-faced bureaucrat appeared on screen. "Greetings, Lemuel and Nova. We have received intelligence that a rogue agent is operating in the sector, posing a significant threat to intergalactic security. We require your assistance in tracking down and apprehending this individual."

Lemuel's eyes narrowed. "What makes you think we're the right people for the job?"

The bureaucrat's expression turned bland. "Your...reputation precedes you, Lemuel. You and Nova are the best in the business. We're willing to pay top credits for your services."

Lemuel's gaze cut back to Nova, and for an instant, he saw something flicker in her eyes – a spark of hope, of desperation. He knew that look, knew that she was counting on him to save her, to save them both.

But Lemuel's heart was heavy, his trust in Nova shattered. He didn't know if he could do it, if he could work with her again, knowing the secrets she kept.

"Tell me more about this rogue agent," Lemuel said, his voice flat, his mind racing with the implications.

The bureaucrat's eyes never wavered. "The agent is known only as 'The Architect.' They have access to advanced technology and are rumored to be willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. We need you to track them down and put a stop to their activities before it's too late."

As the transmission ended, Lemuel turned to Nova, his eyes cold and unforgiving. "You're coming with me, Nova. We have a job to do. But don't think for a second that this means I've forgiven you."

Nova's eyes flashed with a mixture of fear and determination. "I know, Lemuel. And I won't let you down. Again."

But as they stepped away from the comms panel, Lemuel couldn't shake the feeling that he was walking into a trap, that Nova's secrets would ultimately be the downfall of them all.

And as they disappeared into the unknown, the words echoed in his mind: "Trust Betrayed Again..."
