第146章 "Shadowed by Her Eyes"
谍影风云
**Chapter 146: "The Whispering Walls"**
I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was being watched. Every creak of the wooden floorboards, every flicker of the fluorescent lights, made me jump. I was starting to lose my edge, my focus. And it was all because of her.
I slipped out of the room, trying to clear my head. The corridor was dark and deserted, the only sound the distant hum of the air conditioning. I took a deep breath, trying to calm down. What was wrong with me? I was a professional, a master of disguise and deception. I had infiltrated enemy camps, gathered intel, and completed missions without being detected. What was this woman doing to me?
As I walked, the walls seemed to whisper secrets in my ear. I spun around, but there was no one there. The sound was coming from within my own head, a nagging suspicion that I couldn't ignore. I stopped in front of a mirror, and for a moment, I stared at my own reflection. The man looking back was a stranger, a chess piece in a game of cat and mouse.
"Lin," a voice whispered behind me. I spun around, my hand instinctively reaching for my gun. Night Owl, the head of the enemy organization, stood in the doorway, a sly smile spreading across his face.
"Surprised to see me, Shadow?" he asked, his eyes glinting with amusement.
I narrowed my eyes. "What do you want?"
"Oh, just a little chat," he said, strolling into the room. "I've been thinking about our little game. You're very good, Shadow. But I think it's time we took it to the next level."
My instincts screamed warning, but I kept my cool. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, I've discovered your little secret," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "The photograph. The woman. You're not just a spy, Shadow. You're a man with a past. And I'm going to find out what it is."
I felt a chill run down my spine. How did he know? And what did he know about my past? I knew I had to keep my cool, to play along. But my mind was racing, trying to think of a plan, a way to get out of this.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I lied, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Oh, don't play dumb, Shadow," Night Owl said, his eyes glinting with triumph. "I have evidence. And I'm willing to trade it for something far more valuable... a chance to get close to her."
I felt my heart skip a beat. Who was he talking about? The woman in the photograph? Or someone else entirely? I knew I had to get out of there, to regroup and come up with a plan. But Night Owl's words had planted a seed of doubt in my mind. What did I really know about my past? And what secrets lay hidden, waiting to be uncovered?
