第99章 "Silent Alarm"

星际猎人

**The 99th Chapter: The Web of Secrets**

Nova's outburst seemed to have no effect on Lemuel, who remained silent and stoic, his eyes fixed on some distant point. Nova's anger turned to desperation, and she reached for her comms device, buzzing with unspoken words. "Get me an update on the ship's systems," she snapped at the AI.

Lemuel's gaze finally shifted, his eyes locking onto Nova's with a hint of warning. "You shouldn't be doing that, Nova," he said, his voice low and even.

Nova's hand hesitated on the device. "What do you mean?" she asked, her tone laced with suspicion.

"I mean, you're getting close to the truth, but you're not ready for it," Lemuel replied, his eyes glinting with a knowing light.

Nova's grip on the device tightened. "What truth?" she demanded, her patience wearing thin.

Lemuel leaned back in his chair, a calculating glint in his eye. "You'll find out soon enough. For now, just focus on the mission."

Nova's frustration boiled over, and she slammed her fist on the table once more. "This isn't a game, Lemuel! Lives are at stake! You're hiding something from me, and I won't rest until I know what it is!"

Lemuel's expression remained impassive, but a flicker of something – interest, concern, or something else entirely – danced in his eyes. "I'm afraid that's classified, Nova," he said, his voice dripping with civility.

The tension in the room was palpable, the air thick with unspoken words. Nova knew she was on the cusp of uncovering a web of secrets, but Lemuel seemed determined to keep her in the dark. As she gazed at him, a spark of determination reignited within her. She would get to the truth, no matter what it took.

And then, just as she was about to demand more answers, the comms device crackled to life, its voice a stark contrast to the silence that had filled the room. "Captain Nova, we're receiving a transmission from an unknown source. It's encrypted, but I think it's for your eyes only."

Nova's gaze snapped to Lemuel, who was watching her with an unreadable expression. "Put it through," she commanded, her heart racing with anticipation.

The device beeped, and a holographic screen flickered to life, projecting an image of a familiar figure – or, rather, a hologram of one. Nova's eyes widened as the hologram cleared, revealing a shocking truth...

And just as she was about to react, the screen went dark, leaving her with more questions than answers. Lemuel's silence was deafening, and Nova knew she was in for the fight of her life...
