**The 31st Chapter: The Rift**
Lemuel's eyes continued to bore into Nova's, his composure barely intact. He had always known that she was hiding something, but the revelation still sent a shockwave through his mind.
"What are you hiding, Nova?" he demanded, his voice low and even.
Nova's expression didn't change, but Lemuel detected a flicker of unease in her eyes. "Nothing, Lemuel. Why would I hide anything from you?"
Lemuel snorted. "Don't play dumb with me, Nova. I've seen the way you glance at me, like you're sizing me up. And that conversation with General Rylan...?"
Nova's mask slipped, and for a moment, Lemuel caught a glimpse of something like fear in her eyes. "Lemuel, stop. You're reading too much into this."
"Into what?" Lemuel's voice rose, his anger simmering just below the surface. "Into the fact that you're hiding something from me? Into the fact that you're working with General Rylan behind my back?"
Nova's face paled, and she took a step back, her eyes darting around the room as if searching for an escape route. "Lemuel, please... just listen to me."
Lemuel's grip on his chair tightened. He didn't want to listen to her excuses, didn't want to hear her lies. But a part of him, a small and rational part, urged him to listen, to understand.
"Tell me, Nova," he said, his voice cold and detached. "What's going on?"
Nova took a deep breath, her eyes pleading. "It's about the mission, Lemuel. The one we're about to embark on... it's more complicated than I initially let on."
Lemuel raised an eyebrow. "Complicated? That's an understatement. You're hiding something, and I aim to find out what."
Nova's face twisted in a mixture of anger and desperation. "Fine, Lemuel. Have it your way. But you're not going to like what you find out."
As the words left her lips, the room seemed to darken, the shadows deepening into an abyss that threatened to swallow them whole. Lemuel's heart raced, his mind reeling with the implications of Nova's confession. He knew that he had to get to the bottom of this, no matter the cost.
But as he turned to leave, he felt a hand grasp his arm, holding him back. Nova's eyes locked onto his, a warning glinting in their depths.
"Lemuel, listen to me," she whispered urgently. "You don't know what you're dealing with. You can't trust anyone. Not even me."
The words sent a chill down Lemuel's spine. He felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead as he realized that Nova was right. In this galaxy of lies and deception, trust was a luxury he could no longer afford.
And with that, the darkness closed in, the silence between them deafening.
To be continued...
