第28章 "Web of Deceit Unraveled"

星际猎人

**The 28th Chapter: The Web of Betrayal**

Lemuel's eyes never left Nova's, his gaze burning with a mixture of suspicion and curiosity. Nova's expression remained impassive, her eyes flicking between Lemuel and the docking bay's entrance as if counting down the seconds until she could make a break for it.

"I'm not hiding anything, Lemuel," Nova said, her voice even, but her eyes betraying a hint of nervousness.

Lemuel snorted. "Save it, Nova. I've seen enough deception in the shadows to know when someone's hiding something. You're not as good as you think you are."

Nova's jaw clenched, her eyes flashing with anger. "You have no right to question me, Lemuel. I've earned your trust, remember?"

Lemuel's expression turned cold. "Trust is a luxury we can't afford, Nova. Not when the stakes are this high. And besides, I've got a feeling you're connected to the recent string of smuggling operations on the outskirts of the New Earth Federation."

Nova's eyes widened, her face pale. "Smuggling? What are you talking about?"

Lemuel pulled out a holographic image, projecting it in front of Nova. "This is the manifest from the latest smuggling vessel we intercepted. And if I'm not mistaken, there's a familiar face in the cargo bay... someone who's been planning to make a big name for himself in the galaxy."

Nova's eyes darted between the image and Lemuel's face, her expression shifting from outrage to panic. "That's... that's just a coincidence. I don't know what you're talking about."

Lemuel's smile was cold and calculated. "Don't play dumb, Nova. I've got evidence. And with one phone call, I can turn you in and send you to the authorities."

Nova's eyes seemed to flash with desperation. "You wouldn't do that, Lemuel. We're partners. I'm on your side."

Lemuel raised an eyebrow. "Partners? Are you kidding me? You're nothing but a pawn in a much larger game, Nova. And I'm about to uncover the web of deceit that's been hiding in plain sight."

As the tension between them reached a boiling point, the docking bay's entrance slid open, revealing a group of heavily armed mercenaries. Their leader, a towering figure with a scarred face, stepped forward.

"Lemuel Xio, you're under arrest for smuggling contraband and conspiracy to commit murder."

Lemuel's eyes locked onto Nova's, a mixture of surprise and suspicion written across his face. "Nova, what's going on?"

Nova's eyes seemed to plead with him. "Lemuel, trust me. I didn't know anything about this. I swear."

But Lemuel's trust was already shattered. As the mercenaries closed in, he knew he was in for the fight of his life. And in the shadows, a sinister figure watched with interest, waiting for the perfect moment to strike...
