**89. Web of Deceit: The Web Unravels (Continued)**
Lin Chao's patience was wearing thin, his eyes never leaving Old Ghost's face as he waited for a response. The silence was like a physical presence, suffocating and oppressive. Old Ghost's expression remained impassive, his eyes a mask of neutrality. Lin Chao's mind was racing, his gut telling him that something was off.
Suddenly, Old Ghost's eyes flickered, a hint of something like anger or frustration flashing across his face before being quickly masked. "You're quite clever, Lin Chao," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I didn't think anyone could figure out my little secret so quickly."
Lin Chao's grip on the chair tightened, his instincts screaming at him to be cautious. "What secret?" he asked, his voice even, his tone neutral.
Old Ghost chuckled, a cold, mirthless sound. "Oh, come now, Lin Chao. You're not going to play dumb, are you? You know exactly what I'm talking about. The evidence is right in front of you."
Lin Chao's eyes narrowed, his mind racing to keep up with the conversation. "Evidence?" he repeated, his tone puzzled.
Old Ghost leaned forward, his eyes glinting with a sinister light. "The records, Lin Chao. The ones that show your character's... unusual abilities. The ones that show your character is not of this world."
Lin Chao's heart skipped a beat as he felt the truth hit him like a slap in the face. "How did you...?" he started to ask, his voice trailing off.
Old Ghost laughed again, the sound sending a shiver down Lin Chao's spine. "Let's just say I have my ways, Lin Chao. And now that you know, I think it's time for us to part ways. Permanently."
As Old Ghost stood up, Lin Chao felt a surge of adrenaline coursing through his veins. He knew he had to act fast, before Old Ghost made good on his threat. He sprang into action, his chair scraping against the floor as he leapt to his feet.
But Old Ghost was ready for him. With a swift movement, he pulled out a small device from his pocket and pressed a button. The room was suddenly plunged into darkness, the only sound the hum of machinery.
Lin Chao's heart raced as he stumbled forward, his hands outstretched in front of him. "What's going on?" he shouted, his voice echoing off the walls.
Old Ghost's laughter echoed through the darkness, sending chills down Lin Chao's spine. "You should have listened, Lin Chao. You should have listened to your instincts. Now, you'll never leave this place alive."
And with that, the darkness consumed Lin Chao, leaving him with more questions than answers. What had just happened? And what did Old Ghost mean by his parting words? The fate of Lin Chao hung in the balance, as the darkness seemed to swallow him whole.
