天龙傲世
**Chapter 48: The Shattering**
Xie Yuan's jaw clenched as Lin Wan'er's words cut through the thick air, the sound of her voice like a crack of thunder in his mind. He felt his pride, once a mountain, begin to crumble under the weight of his guilt. The silence that followed was oppressive, the only sound the heavy breathing of the two combatants.
"I've never hidden behind anyone," Xie Yuan spat, his eyes flashing with anger. "I've always stood on my own two feet, never needing anyone's help or validation."
"Really?" Lin Wan'er's voice dripped with venom. "Then why did you let me believe otherwise for so long? Why did you lead me on, only to throw me away like yesterday's trash?"
Xie Yuan's face twisted in a mixture of pain and rage. "You were never mine to begin with," he snarled, the words tearing from his lips like a wounded animal. "You were just a means to an end, a way for me to get what I wanted."
Lin Wan'er's eyes widened, her face pale as a ghost. "You...you're telling me that everything we shared, every moment we spent together, was just a lie?" Her voice rose, shrill and hysterical. "You're saying that I was just a pawn in your game?"
Xie Yuan's eyes seemed to burn with an inner fire. "You were never more than that," he growled, his fists clenched at his sides. "You were always just a tool, a means to an end."
Their gazes locked, the air between them electric with conflict. Lin Wan'er's face was a mask of shock and betrayal, while Xie Yuan's was a twisted landscape of pain and anger. The silence between them was shattered, replaced by the sound of shattering glass as the mirror of their relationship lay in pieces on the floor.
And then, without warning, Lin Wan'er vanished. One moment she was there, her eyes blazing with fury, and the next she was gone, leaving Xie Yuan staring after her like a man possessed. He spun around, his eyes scanning the room frantically, but she was nowhere to be found.
"Where did she go?" he muttered to himself, his mind racing with possibilities. "And why did she leave?"
As he stood there, lost in thought, a faint sound reached his ears. It was the soft hum of a sword being unsheathed.
Xie Yuan's head snapped up, his eyes narrowing as he spotted the glint of steel in the darkness. A figure emerged from the shadows, their face obscured by a hood.
"Lin Wan'er?" Xie Yuan called out, his voice low and cautious. "Is that you?"
The figure didn't respond, but instead drew closer, their sword gleaming in the dim light. Xie Yuan's hand instinctively went to his own sword, his heart pounding in his chest like a drum.
And then, in the blink of an eye, the darkness was illuminated by a flash of steel, and the battle was joined...
