第44章 "Embers of Silence"

天龙傲世

**Chapter 44: The Ultimatum**

The silence between Xie Yuan and Lin Wan'er stretched on, becoming increasingly uncomfortable. Xie Yuan's eyes still burned with a mix of emotions, his mind struggling to process the words Lin Wan'er had spoken. He knew he had to say something, but his pride and ego were screaming at him to remain silent.

Lin Wan'er, sensing the tension, took a step forward, her eyes never leaving Xie Yuan's face. "You're really going to play dumb, aren't you?" her voice was cold and detached. "You're going to pretend like you didn't betray me, like we didn't share the same breath, the same blood?"

Xie Yuan's jaw clenched, his face reddening. "I didn't betray you, Lin Wan'er. I was just trying to protect myself." He spat out the words, the venom in his tone clear.

Lin Wan'er's eyes flashed with anger. "Protect yourself? From who? From what? You're stronger than I am, stronger than anyone in the Seven Wonders Association. You didn't need to betray me, Xie Yuan. You didn't need to use me as a pawn in your game."

Xie Yuan's eyes narrowed. "You're not the only one who knows how to play the game, Lin Wan'er. I'm not going to apologize for protecting myself. I'm not going to apologize for being who I am."

The air was electric with tension as the two former allies faced off. Lin Wan'er's hands clenched into fists, her knuckles white with rage. "Fine," she hissed. "If that's how you want to play it, then let's end this once and for all."

Xie Yuan's eyes locked onto hers, a cold calculation spreading across his face. "I'm ready, Lin Wan'er. Bring it on."

Lin Wan'er's smile was like a razor's edge. "Oh, I will. I'll bring the whole Seven Wonders Association down on you, and you'll see what it means to betray someone like me."

As the confrontation unfolded, the shadows in the room seemed to grow longer, darker. The air was heavy with the weight of unspoken threats and unmet promises. It was clear that the storm that had been brewing was about to unleash its full fury upon the city.

And Xie Yuan, standing tall and proud, was ready to face the tempest head-on.

But as he gazed into Lin Wan'er's eyes, he saw something there that made his heart skip a beat. A glimmer of something that looked almost like... sadness.

The thought was fleeting, but it was enough to make Xie Yuan pause. Enough to make him wonder if he had misjudged Lin Wan'er entirely...

And then, just as suddenly, the moment was gone, replaced by the cold, calculating gaze of his former ally.

The game was afoot, and Xie Yuan knew that he had to be ready to face whatever lay ahead.

But as he turned to leave, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was walking into a trap, one that would change the course of his life forever...

To be continued...
