Chapter 101: The Hidden Truth
程星's eyes blazed with a mixture of anger and frustration. "You're telling me that the entire universe is on the brink of collapse, and you're just now mentioning it?" she exclaimed, her voice laced with incredulity.
The engineer, seemingly unfazed by her outburst, nodded solemnly. "I'm afraid so, Program Director. The crisis has been building for centuries, and we've only recently become aware of its magnitude."
程星's gaze drifted away, her mind reeling with the implications. "And what does this have to do with the signal from the Andromeda galaxy?"
The engineer leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together. "The signal, Program Director, is a warning. A desperate cry for help from an ancient civilization that has been watching us for eons."
程星's eyes snapped back to the engineer, her grip on the armrests tightening. "What do you mean, 'watching us'?"
The engineer's expression turned grave. "The Andromeda galaxy, Program Director, is home to an advanced civilization that has been studying humanity for thousands of years. They've been monitoring our progress, our achievements, and our mistakes."
程星's voice was low and venomous. "And what conclusions did they draw from their observations?"
The engineer's eyes seemed to bore into hers. "They saw a species on the brink of destruction, Program Director. A species that is doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again unless... unless it changes its course."
程星's face twisted in a mixture of rage and despair. "And what do you propose we do, Engineer? What's the solution to this cosmic crisis?"
The engineer's smile was cold and calculating. "I propose, Program Director, that we take a leap of faith. We must abandon our petty human concerns and join the greater cosmic community. The Andromedans are willing to share their knowledge with us, to guide us towards a new path. But it will require great sacrifice."
程星's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with the implications. "What kind of sacrifice?"
The engineer's expression turned solemn. "The sacrifice, Program Director, will be our freedom. Our autonomy. We will be relinquishing our dominance over this planet, and our place in the universe, to become mere vassals of the Andromedans."
程星's face twisted in a snarl. "I refuse to accept that. I will never surrender our humanity to some alien power. We will find another way, Engineer. We will find a way to save ourselves, without bowing down to these... these... gods."
The engineer's eyes seemed to bore into hers, his voice dripping with disdain. "You're bluffing, Program Director. You're betting on a desperate chance, against an enemy that is far more powerful and ancient than you could ever imagine. But I'll give you credit – you're a worthy opponent. The game is on, and only time will tell who will emerge victorious."
As the words hung in the air, the room seemed to grow darker, as if the shadows themselves were closing in. 程星's eyes locked onto the engineer's, her heart pounding in her chest. She knew that she was playing with fire, but she was determined to fight for humanity's freedom, no matter the cost. Little did she know, however, that the true enemy was not the Andromedans, but the darkness that lurked within her own heart...
