第174章 "Shadows Within"
谍影风云
**Chapter 174: "The Trap"**
I glared at Rachel, my mind racing with the possibilities. "You expect me to believe that the leak came from within our own organization?" I repeated, trying to keep the incredulity out of my voice.
Rachel nodded calmly, her eyes never leaving mine. "I'm telling you, Lin, it's the only explanation. The information was compromised, and we need to find out who's responsible."
I snorted. "And you're telling me this now, after three years of working together, because...?"
Rachel's expression turned serious. "Because I've been given new orders. Orders that say I have to prioritize the mission above all else."
My gut twisted. This was getting too convenient. "And what exactly are these newfound orders?"
Rachel's eyes flashed with a hint of desperation. "I don't know, Lin. But I know I'm being watched. And I know I can't trust anyone."
I rubbed my temples, trying to process this sudden turn of events. Rachel, the woman I thought I knew, was now revealing herself to be a master manipulator. But why? What was her ultimate goal?
The room seemed to grow darker, the shadows deepening as if they themselves were closing in. I knew I had to tread carefully. Rachel was a skilled operative, but I was the one with the upper hand.
"So, what do you propose we do?" I asked, my voice neutral.
Rachel hesitated, her gaze darting to the side. "I think we should investigate the leak internally. Track down the source and eliminate it."
I raised an eyebrow. "And what about the mission? The one you're supposed to prioritize?"
Rachel's eyes locked onto mine, a flicker of something almost like fear flickering across her face. "I'll handle that. You just need to trust me."
I felt a shiver run down my spine as I realized that Rachel was playing a game I didn't understand. And I was the one who was about to get caught in the crossfire.
"Rachel, I think it's time we stopped playing games," I said, my voice low and even.
Rachel's expression went cold. "You're starting to understand, Lin. But it's too late for that. You see, I've been playing by the rules all along. But now, the rules have changed."
The room seemed to grow quieter, the only sound the ticking of a clock in the distance. I knew I had to think fast, before Rachel made her next move.
But as I turned to leave, I felt something hard and unforgiving pressed against my back. A cold, metallic grip that seemed to be saying, "You're trapped."
And in that moment, I knew that I was in the trap of my own making.
To be continued...
