第171章 "Cracks in the Deceit"
谍影风云
**Chapter 171: "The Betrayal"**
I stared at Rachel, my mind racing with possibilities. She was a master of deception, but even she couldn't maintain this level of innocence for long. I could feel it, like a tiny crack in her mask.
"Just tell me what's going on," I said, my voice firm but controlled. "I know you're hiding something."
Rachel's eyes flickered, a brief flash of guilt before she regained her composure. "I don't know what you're talking about, Lin."
Lie. I knew it. My gut told me she was hiding something, and I was determined to uncover the truth.
I leaned forward, my eyes burning with intensity. "Don't play coy with me, Rachel. We've been working together for months. I know your tricks."
Rachel's eyes narrowed, a hint of anger creeping into them. "You're starting to get paranoid, Lin. Maybe you should take a step back and reassess your priorities."
A warning? Or a veiled threat? I wasn't sure, but I knew I had to tread carefully.
I forced a smile, trying to keep the tension at bay. "Oh, I'm just getting started. You know as well as I do that time is running out. We need to make a move, and fast."
Rachel's gaze lingered on mine, her expression unreadable. For a moment, I thought I saw a glimmer of understanding, but then it was gone, replaced by a neutral mask once more.
"I agree," she said finally, her voice measured. "But we need to do it my way. Your... methods are too reckless."
Too reckless? I felt a surge of anger at her words, but I pushed it down, knowing I had to keep my cool.
"Fine," I said, my voice even. "I'll play by your rules. For now. But know this, Rachel: I'll find out what you're hiding, and when I do, you'll regret underestimating me."
Rachel's eyes flashed with annoyance, but I just smiled, a cold, calculated smile. The game had just taken a deadly turn, and I was ready to play.
As we parted ways, I couldn't shake the feeling that Rachel was hiding something big. Something that could change the course of our mission – and our lives – forever.
