第169章 " Deadly Secrets Unveiled"
谍影风云
**第169章:“The Silent Killer”**
I narrowed my eyes at Rachel's neutral expression, my instincts screaming at me that something was off. "Rachel, I know you're hiding something from me. What's going on?" I demanded, my voice low and urgent.
Rachel's gaze didn't waver, but her hands tightened around the file she held. "Lin, I'm just trying to do my job. You know that."
I snorted. "Your job? You're not just anyone's colleague, Rachel. You're Night Owl's right-hand woman. And I'm starting to think that Night Owl is playing us all like puppets on strings."
Rachel's eyes flashed with anger, but she quickly regained her composure. "That's not fair, Lin. We're all just trying to make a difference."
"Make a difference?" I repeated, incredulous. "By betraying me and the organization? By using me as a pawn in your game of cat and mouse?"
Rachel's face paled, but she didn't back down. "I'm not taking sides, Lin. I'm just doing what needs to be done."
I slammed my fist on the table, making Rachel jump. "Enough! I've had enough of your lies, Rachel. You're either with me or against me. Which is it?"
The tension in the room was palpable, and for a moment, it seemed like Rachel might crack. But then, she smiled – a cold, calculated smile that sent shivers down my spine.
"Lin, you're so quick to assume the worst. But sometimes, the truth is hidden in plain sight. And sometimes, it's necessary to make sacrifices for the greater good."
I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized what Rachel was implying. "You're talking about me, aren't you? You're talking about using me as a pawn in your game."
Rachel's smile grew wider. "I'm talking about the bigger picture, Lin. And sometimes, that means making tough choices."
I felt my grip on reality begin to slip as I stared at Rachel's smug face. Was she truly willing to betray me like this? Or was she just playing a long game to get what she wanted?
The uncertainty was suffocating, and I knew I had to get out of there before I lost my mind. But as I turned to leave, Rachel's voice stopped me.
"Lin, there's one more thing. You need to know that Night Owl is getting impatient. He's setting a trap for you, and you need to be careful not to get caught in it."
I spun back around, my blood running cold. "What kind of trap?"
Rachel's smile grew even wider. "Oh, that's classified. But I'm sure you'll find out soon enough."
With that, she turned and walked away, leaving me staring at her retreating back, my mind reeling with the implications. What was Night Owl planning? And how could I possibly get out of this web of lies and deceit alive?
