谍影风云
**Chapter 157: "The Game of Smoke and Mirrors"**
I couldn't believe Rachel's betrayal. We had been partners for so long, sharing secrets and trust. But now, it seemed like everything was a lie.
"You're not even going to try to explain?" I asked, my gun still trained on her.
Rachel's expression was calm, almost apologetic. "I didn't want to hurt you, Lin. But this is the only way to ensure our mission succeeds."
I felt a surge of anger and betrayal. "Our mission? You mean the mission to take down Nightshade?"
Rachel's eyes flickered, just for a moment. "Yes. You know as well as I do that Nightshade is our biggest hurdle. And if we can take him down, we'll be one step closer to our ultimate goal."
I snorted. "You're just using me to get to Nightshade. But what about our partnership? Our friendship?"
Rachel's smile was cold and calculated. "That was just a means to an end, Lin. A way to get closer to our target."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. I couldn't believe the woman I thought I knew had been playing me all along.
"I think it's time we called in backup," I said, my voice cold and detached.
Rachel raised an eyebrow. "You're going to call in backup on me? You're really that trusting of Nightshade?"
I shrugged. "I'm trusting my instincts. And my instincts are telling me that I can't trust you right now."
Rachel's expression darkened, and for a moment, I thought she was going to shoot me right there on the spot. But then, her face relaxed, and she smiled again.
"Fine. Do what you need to do. But know this, Lin: you're making a big mistake."
I felt a shiver run down my spine as she turned and walked away, leaving me to wonder what she had planned.
I holstered my gun and pulled out my phone, dialing the one person I knew I could trust. Nightshade.
"Where are you?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Right where I've always been," he replied, his voice low and smooth. "Watching and waiting. And you, my dear Lin, are playing right into my hands."
I felt a chill run down my spine. What had I just gotten myself into?
Suddenly, my phone went dead, and I was left staring at a screen with a single message:
"Meet me at the old clock tower at midnight. Come alone."
I knew I had to go. But I had a feeling that I was walking into a trap.
