第73章 "Betrayers' Gambit"

星际猎人

**The 73rd Chapter: The Fractured Alliance**

Lemuel's eyes seethed with rage as he stared at Nova, his mind reeling from the revelation. "You're telling me that the Shadow Syndicate was using us all along?" he growled, his voice low and menacing.

Nova's expression remained calm, but a hint of desperation crept into her eyes. "Lemuel, listen to me—"

"No, Nova. I don't want to hear your lies. You're supposed to be my partner, my friend. How could you deceive me like this?" Lemuel's words were laced with venom, and Nova flinched at the intensity of his gaze.

"I...I didn't have a choice," she stammered, her voice trembling. "They threatened to harm my family, my friends. I had to play along, or—"

"Or you'd be a hero, huh?" Lemuel sneered, his anger boiling over. "You'd save the world from the evil Shadow Syndicate. But what about us, Nova? What about our partnership? What about our trust?"

Nova's eyes welled up with tears, and for a moment, Lemuel felt a pang of sadness. But it was quickly replaced by a cold, calculating logic. He knew he couldn't trust her anymore.

"I'll deal with you later, Nova," he said, his voice cold and detached. "Right now, we have a bigger problem. The Shadow Syndicate is still out there, and we need to stop them."

Lemuel turned to leave, but Nova's voice stopped him. "Lemuel, wait! We can still work together, I—"

"No, Nova," he interrupted, his voice firm. "You're on your own now. I'll finish this mission, with or without you. And as for our partnership...it's over."

Nova's face fell, and Lemuel felt a pang of guilt. But he pushed it aside, focusing on the task at hand. He knew that the Shadow Syndicate wouldn't hesitate to strike, and he had to be ready.

As he walked away, Lemuel's comms device beeped, and he answered it. "This is Lemuel. What's the situation?"

"Ambassador Zhang is requesting your presence," the voice on the other end replied. "It seems there's been a development in the negotiations with the New Earth Federation."

Lemuel's eyes narrowed. What could Zhang want? And what kind of development could be so critical that it required his immediate attention?

"I'm on my way," he said, his mind racing with possibilities. He didn't have time for Nova's drama; he had a planet to save.

As he made his way to the ambassador's office, Lemuel couldn't shake off the feeling that he was walking into a trap. The Shadow Syndicate was always one step ahead, and he knew that he had to be prepared for anything.

But what he didn't know was that the real betrayal was yet to come.
