第37章 "Shattered Trust"

星际猎人

**The 37th Chapter: Fractured Bonds**

Lemuel's eyes burned with a mixture of anger and hurt as he stared at Nova, his voice low and venomous. "You're telling me you've been hiding this secret from me all along? How could you, Nova? We're supposed to be partners, not enemies."

Nova's expression remained calm, but her eyes betrayed a flicker of guilt. "Lemuel, I had to do what I had to do. You wouldn't have understood."

Lemuel's grip on the chair tightened, his knuckles white with rage. "Understood what? Your betrayal? Your manipulation? You played me like a pawn, Nova. And for what? So you could further your own agenda?"

"I was trying to protect us, Lemuel," Nova said, her voice laced with desperation. "I knew the Alliance wouldn't approve of our partnership if they found out about your... condition."

Lemuel's anger boiled over, and he slammed his fist onto the table. "My condition? You mean my power? My gift? You're saying I'm a liability, Nova. That I'm too much for you to handle."

Nova's eyes flashed with defiance. "I'm saying that you're a risk, Lemuel. A risk I'm not willing to take. And if that means going behind your back, then so be it."

The words cut deep, and Lemuel felt a shard of pain lodged in his heart. He looked at Nova, and for the first time, he saw her not as a friend, but as an enemy.

"You know, Nova," Lemuel said, his voice dripping with venom. "I think it's time we parted ways. Permanently."

Nova's face paled, and for a moment, Lemuel thought he saw a glimmer of fear in her eyes. But then, her expression hardened, and she nodded. "Fine. If that's what you want, then so be it."

The air was thick with tension as the two former partners stood there, the silence between them a heavy, palpable thing. Lemuel knew that this was the end of their partnership, and possibly the end of their friendship. He felt a pang of regret, but it was too late for apologies, too late for forgiveness.

As they parted ways, Lemuel couldn't shake the feeling that he was walking into a trap, that Nova's betrayal was just the beginning of a much larger game. And he knew that he would have to be ready to fight if he wanted to survive.

But as he vanished into the shadows, Lemuel heard Nova's whispered words echoing in his mind: "You don't know the truth, Lemuel. And when you do, you'll regret the day you ever crossed me."
