第70章 "Shadows Within"

网游之天下无双

**70. Web of Deceit: The Shadow Play**

Lin Chao's gaze didn't waver, his eyes burning with an intensity that made Old Ghost's mask-like calm begin to crack. "You're hiding something, Old Ghost," Lin Chao said, his voice low and ominous. "Something big."

Old Ghost's calm façade faltered, and for a moment, Lin Chao saw a glimmer of something deeper, something hidden beneath the surface. But it was quickly replaced by the mask-like calm, and Old Ghost spoke in a voice devoid of emotion. "I'm not hiding anything, Lin Chao. I'm just...curious."

Lin Chao's eyes narrowed. "Curious? You're telling me you're just curious about the whispers I've been hearing? Whispers that seem to be connected to the Shadow Play?"

Old Ghost's mask-like calm seemed to slip ever so slightly, and for a moment, Lin Chao thought he saw a flicker of fear in Old Ghost's eyes. But it was quickly extinguished, replaced by the same calm demeanor. "Perhaps," Old Ghost said. "I'm just trying to understand the rumors, Lin Chao. That's all."

Lin Chao's grip on his sword tightened. He didn't believe Old Ghost. Not for a moment. "Rumors?" Lin Chao repeated, his voice dripping with skepticism. "You're not going to deny it, are you?"

Old Ghost's mask-like calm seemed to falter even further, and for a moment, Lin Chao thought he saw a glimmer of desperation in Old Ghost's eyes. But it was quickly replaced by the same calm demeanor. "I'm not denying anything, Lin Chao. I'm just...trying to clear the air."

Lin Chao's eyes locked onto Old Ghost's, his mind racing with the implications of what he had uncovered. The air was heavy with tension, the silence between them thick with unspoken words.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway, growing louder with each passing moment. Lin Chao's grip on his sword tightened, his instincts screaming at him to be ready for anything.

Old Ghost's mask-like calm seemed to slip ever so slightly, and for a moment, Lin Chao thought he saw a flicker of fear in Old Ghost's eyes. But it was quickly extinguished, replaced by the same calm demeanor.

"Ah, it seems we have company," Old Ghost said, his voice dripping with a hint of menace. "Perhaps we should...reconvene another time, Lin Chao."

Lin Chao's eyes narrowed, his instincts screaming at him to be wary of Old Ghost's sudden change in demeanor. "I'm not going anywhere, Old Ghost," Lin Chao said, his voice firm. "Not until we get to the bottom of this."

Old Ghost's mask-like calm seemed to slip ever so slightly, and for a moment, Lin Chao thought he saw a glimmer of anger in Old Ghost's eyes. But it was quickly replaced by the same calm demeanor.

"Very well, Lin Chao," Old Ghost said, his voice dripping with a hint of menace. "Let us...enjoy the company of our new friends, then."

The sound of footsteps grew louder, and Lin Chao's instincts screamed at him to be ready for anything. He tightened his grip on his sword, his eyes locked onto Old Ghost's, as the darkness seemed to grow thicker, the silence more oppressive.

And then, the doors burst open, and a group of figures strode into the room, their eyes fixed on Lin Chao and Old Ghost. Lin Chao's instincts screamed at him to be ready, to defend himself against whatever lay ahead. But as he looked into the eyes of the newcomers, he saw something that made his blood run cold.

It was the same look he had seen in the eyes of the whispers. The same look of...desperation.

And Lin Chao knew that his worst fears were about to come true.
