第172章 "Truth Behind the Deception"

网游之天下无双

**172. The Web of Lies**

Lin Chao's gaze didn't waver, his expression as calm as a still pond. "I'm listening," he said, his voice low and even. The tavern's patrons leaned in, their eyes fixed on the unfolding drama.

Old Ghost's face twisted in a snarl. "You think you're so smart, don't you? Always poking your nose into other people's business. But let me tell you, Lin Chao, you're not as innocent as you seem."

Lin Chao raised an eyebrow. "Care to explain that?" His tone was neutral, but his eyes sparkled with a hint of curiosity.

Old Ghost's eyes flashed with malice. "You know exactly what I'm talking about. The whispers, the rumors... you're the one who's been spreading them, aren't you?"

The tavern erupted into a chorus of gasps and whispers. Lin Chao's expression remained unchanging, but his grip on his glass tightened infinitesimally.

"Whispers?" he repeated, his voice dripping with innocence. "What whispers?"

Old Ghost's laughter was like a snake slithering through the grass. "Oh, come now, Lin Chao. You know exactly what I'm talking about. The rumors about my 'accidents', the mysterious disappearances of certain... acquaintances. You're the one who's been whispering in people's ears, aren't you?"

The tavern grew quieter, the patrons exchanging nervous glances. Lin Chao's eyes never left Old Ghost's face, but his voice was like a summer breeze on a scorching day. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Old Ghost's smile was a thin, cruel line. "Save it, Lin Chao. I know exactly what you're capable of. You're a master of manipulation, a weaver of webs. But you're not as clever as you think you are. I have evidence, Lin Chao. Evidence that will tear your entire web of lies apart."

The tavern's patrons began to murmur, their voices growing louder as the tension mounted. Lin Chao's expression remained calm, but his eyes seemed to flash with a hint of warning. Old Ghost's words hung in the air like a gauntlet thrown, daring Lin Chao to deny the truth.

And then, just as it seemed like the storm was about to break, the tavern's doors burst open and a young woman strode in, her eyes scanning the room with a mixture of panic and determination. "Old Ghost, wait! Don't say anything, please!"

Old Ghost's eyes locked onto the newcomer, his face darkening with suspicion. "Who is this?" he growled.

The young woman didn't flinch. "I'm Jia, Lin Chao's... friend. Please, Old Ghost, don't believe whatever lies he's told you. He's not what you think he is."

The tavern erupted into chaos, patrons arguing and shouting as the tension mounted. Lin Chao's eyes never left Jia's face, his expression unreadable. But the question on everyone's lips was the same: what secrets was Jia hiding, and what did she know about Lin Chao's mysterious past?
