**120. The Quagmire of Deceit**
Lin Chao's eyes remained fixed on Old Ghost, his mind reeling from the revelation. He felt like he had been punched in the gut, as if the truth had ripped open a wound he thought had long healed. The old man's words still echoed in his mind, threatening to consume him whole.
"You're saying... that the entire game is a lie?" Lin Chao's voice was low and steady, but his words trembled with anger and disbelief.
Old Ghost nodded, his eyes downcast. "I'm afraid so, Lin Chao. The game is just a small part of a much larger web of deceit."
Lin Chao's gaze seemed to bore into the old man's soul, as if searching for any glimmer of truth. "What do you mean? What kind of web?"
Old Ghost hesitated, as if weighing his options. "You've heard of the company that developed the game, haven't you?"
Lin Chao nodded. "Skybound Entertainment. What about them?"
Old Ghost sighed, as if resigned to his fate. "Skybound is just a front, Lin Chao. They're a puppet company, controlled by a powerful organization that's been manipulating the game from the beginning."
Lin Chao's eyes widened in shock. "What organization?"
Old Ghost glanced around the room nervously. "I shouldn't have said that much. You need to be careful, Lin Chao. They'll stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried."
Lin Chao's mind reeled as he tried to process the enormity of Old Ghost's words. He felt like he was trapped in a nightmare, with no escape in sight. The game, it seemed, was just a small part of a much larger conspiracy.
Just then, the door to the room burst open, and a group of heavily armed men stormed in. "Old Ghost, you're under arrest," one of them growled, his eyes fixed on the old man.
Lin Chao's instincts kicked in, and he sprang into action. He drew his sword, ready to defend Old Ghost against the would-be captors. "Leave him alone!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the room.
The men hesitated, unsure of what to do. Lin Chao took advantage of the distraction to strike, his sword slicing through the air with deadly precision. The men retreated, but Lin Chao knew it was only a matter of time before they returned, better equipped and more determined.
As he stood guard over Old Ghost, Lin Chao couldn't shake the feeling that he was trapped in a quagmire of deceit, with no clear path to escape. The game, it seemed, was just the tip of the iceberg. And Lin Chao was about to discover that the truth was far more sinister than he could have ever imagined.
