天龙傲世
**Chapter 78: The Web of Deceit Shatters**
Lin Wan'er's eyes finally met Xie Yuan's, a mixture of fear and determination swirling within their depths. For a moment, the two simply stared at each other, the tension between them palpable. Then, with a deep breath, Lin Wan'er began to speak.
"I'll tell you the truth, Xie Yuan," she said, her voice steady but laced with a hint of desperation. "I didn't kill your sister. I swear it on my honor as a member of the Lin clan."
Xie Yuan's expression remained impassive, his eyes never leaving Lin Wan'er's face. "Go on," he urged, his voice low and even.
Lin Wan'er hesitated, as if weighing her words carefully. "I was with you that night, remember? We went to the restaurant together, and then we got separated in the crowd. I didn't see or hear anything that would suggest your sister's death was anything other than an accident."
Xie Yuan's gaze turned cold, his voice dripping with skepticism. "Save it, Lin Wan'er. I know you're hiding something. I can see it in your eyes."
Lin Wan'er's face paled, her eyes flashing with anger. "How dare you!" she spat, her voice rising. "I'm telling you the truth, and you refuse to listen. You're just as guilty as the one who killed your sister, Xie Yuan!"
Xie Yuan's expression darkened, his fist clenched at his side. "You're playing with fire, Lin Wan'er," he warned, his voice low and menacing. "I'll not be threatened by you. Not now, not ever."
The air was electric with tension as the two stood facing each other, the silence between them thick with unspoken accusations and resentments. Then, without warning, Xie Yuan turned and strode away, leaving Lin Wan'er standing alone in the darkness.
As she watched him go, Lin Wan'er's thoughts were a jumble of emotions – fear, anger, and a deep sense of betrayal. She had told the truth, and yet Xie Yuan refused to believe her. She knew that she had to find a way to clear her name, to prove her innocence and bring the real killer to justice.
But as she turned to leave the house, Lin Wan'er's eyes fell upon a piece of paper on the floor. It was a note, written in a handwriting she recognized all too well.
"The game is far from over, Lin Wan'er," the note read. "You may have escaped this time, but I'll catch you eventually. And when I do, you'll pay the price for your lies."
Lin Wan'er's heart skipped a beat as she read the words, her mind racing with the implications. Who was behind the note, and what did they want from her? She knew that she had to be careful, to watch her back and trust no one.
But as she looked up, she saw Xie Yuan standing in the doorway, his eyes narrowed and his expression cold. "What's going on, Lin Wan'er?" he asked, his voice low and menacing.
Lin Wan'er's heart sank, her eyes locking onto his. She knew that she was in grave danger, and that she had to act fast to clear her name and protect herself. But as she turned to face Xie Yuan, she knew that she was walking into a storm, with no way out.
