**Chapter 118: The Snake in the Grass**
程星's revelation had left the engineer reeling. He sat in stunned silence, his mind racing to process the mountain of lies he had been fed. The dense forest of secrets had finally been exposed, and the engineer felt like he was drowning in the undertow of deceit.
"You're saying that I've been a pawn in your game all along?" the engineer's voice was low and menacing, his eyes burning with anger.
程星 remained calm, his expression unreadable. "I'm telling you the truth, Li. You were chosen for your skills, your expertise. But you were also chosen because of your... limitations."
The engineer's grip on the armrest tightened. "What limitations?"
程星's gaze never wavered. "Your tendency to trust too easily. Your willingness to believe in the best in people. It made you the perfect mark."
The engineer's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with the implications. "And what about the others? The people who helped you set me up?"
程星's expression seemed to falter for a moment, but then he regained his composure. "They were... colleagues. People who shared my vision for the future. But they were also people who knew how to keep secrets."
The engineer's anger was boiling over, and he felt his face growing hot. "You're telling me that I've been played by people I trusted? People I considered friends?"
程星's eyes seemed to bore into his soul. "Yes, Li. I'm afraid that's exactly what I'm telling you."
The engineer's chair scraped against the floor as he pushed himself up from the table. "I need to know everything," he growled. "Every detail, every lie, every deception. I need to know why you did this to me."
程星's expression turned cold, devoid of emotion. "Because, Li, the stakes were too high. The fate of humanity was at risk. And I would do it all again in a heartbeat."
The engineer's anger turned to ice, his heart heavy with the weight of betrayal. He felt like he was trapped in a nightmare, and he didn't know how to wake up.
As he turned to leave, the engineer caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of his eye. A figure, tall and imposing, standing in the shadows. The figure didn't move, didn't speak, but the engineer could feel its gaze upon him like a cold weight.
"What's going on here?" the engineer demanded, his voice low and menacing.
程星's eyes flicked to the figure, then back to the engineer. "I think it's time for you to meet the people who made it all possible," he said, his voice dripping with menace.
And with that, the engineer's world came crashing down around him. He knew that he was in for the fight of his life, and he wasn't sure if he was ready to face what lay ahead.
