第37章 "Web of Lies Entwined"
剑道独尊
**Chapter 37: The Web of Deceit**
Chen Yang's gaze lingered on the girl's face, his mind racing with the implications of her words. He had always prided himself on his ability to read people, but this girl was different. Her eyes seemed to hold a depth, a complexity that he couldn't quite penetrate.
"I'm telling you the truth," she repeated, her voice steady and calm. "I didn't know about the Guild's involvement in the assassination. I swear on my honor as a member of the Cloud Clan."
Chen Yang raised an eyebrow, his grip on the hilt of his sword easing slightly. "Your honor? You're a member of the Cloud Clan, but you're also a member of the Guild. Which one do you truly belong to?"
The girl's eyes flashed with anger, but Chen Yang could see the flicker of uncertainty beneath. He pressed on, his voice growing more intense.
"You're playing both sides against each other, aren't you? Using the Guild's resources to further the Cloud Clan's interests. And what about me? What do you want from me?"
The girl's face paled, her eyes dropping to the ground. "I...I didn't mean to hurt anyone. I just wanted to gain power, to make a name for myself."
Chen Yang's laughter was cold and mirthless. "Power? You're already a member of the Guild and the Cloud Clan. You have the backing of two of the most powerful organizations in the world. What more do you need?"
The girl's eyes snapped back up, a hint of desperation creeping into her voice. "You don't understand. The Guild and the Cloud Clan are at war, and I'm caught in the middle. I'm trying to protect myself, to stay alive."
Chen Yang's grip on the hilt of his sword tightened once more. "Protect yourself? You're playing with fire, girl. The stakes are too high. If the Guild and the Cloud Clan find out about your little game, they'll destroy you, body and soul."
The girl's eyes filled with tears, her voice barely above a whisper. "I know. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt anyone."
Chen Yang's gaze lingered on her face, his mind racing with the implications of her words. He knew that he couldn't trust her, but he also knew that he couldn't kill her. Not yet. He had to get to the bottom of this, to uncover the truth behind her lies and deceit.
And then, just as he was about to speak, a loud commotion erupted outside the room. The sound of shattering glass, the crash of furniture, and the shouts of angry voices filled the air.
Chen Yang's heart skipped a beat as he turned to the girl. "What's going on?"
The girl's eyes widened, her voice trembling. "I...I don't know. But I think it's trouble. Big trouble."
As Chen Yang watched, the girl's eyes seemed to go flat, her expression unreadable. And then, with a sudden movement, she ducked down, out of sight.
Chen Yang's heart raced with anticipation as he drew his sword, ready to face whatever lay beyond the door.
