谍影风云
**Chapter 98: "The Shadow in the Night"**
I stood under the clock tower's faded clock face, my eyes scanning the surrounding darkness. The rain had intensified, making it difficult to see more than a few feet ahead. I checked my watch for the umpteenth time, wondering if Nightshade was playing a cruel joke on me.
Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was a woman, dressed in a long coat that billowed behind her like a dark cloud. Her face was obscured by a hoodie, but I could sense her piercing gaze on me.
"You're late," she said, her voice low and husky.
I shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "Traffic."
She raised an eyebrow. "At midnight?"
I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But something about her made me feel like I could trust her. Maybe it was the way she moved, with a quiet confidence that hinted at a deep understanding of the night.
"Look, Nightshade," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "I know you're not who you say you are. You're Lin Mei, and you're working for some shadowy organization."
Her expression didn't change, but I saw a flicker of surprise in her eyes. "You're clever, Shadow," she said. "I'll give you that."
I took a step closer, my heart pounding in my chest. "What do you want from me? Why are you playing these games with me?"
She smiled, a cold, calculating smile. "You'd be surprised what I want. But for now, let's just say... I need your help. And in return, I'll give you the secrets you're searching for."
I raised my hands, palms up. "What secrets? What's going on, Nightshade?"
She chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down my spine. "You'll find out soon enough. But for now, let's get out of here. We have a long night ahead of us."
As we turned to leave, I felt a strange sensation, like the darkness around us was closing in. I glanced back at the clock tower, wondering if I'd just walked into a trap. But Nightshade was already gone, disappeared into the night like a ghost.
I stood there for a moment, my heart racing with anticipation. What secrets did she have in store for me? And what lay beyond the edge of the night?
I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what was to come. The game was far from over, and I was ready to play. But as I turned to follow Nightshade, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was walking straight into the jaws of death.
To be continued...
