**Chapter 82: "The Looming Threat"**
I pushed aside the tattered curtain, revealing a narrow alleyway that seemed to stretch on forever. Nightshade was nowhere to be seen, but I could sense her presence, like a dark shadow lurking just out of reach. I quickened my pace, my footsteps echoing off the walls as I made my way deeper into the labyrinthine alleys.
Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was a tall, imposing man with a scar above his left eyebrow. His eyes seemed to bore into mine, and I could feel a chill run down my spine.
"Lin, you're a hard man to find," he said, his voice dripping with menace. "But I've been waiting for you."
I drew my gun, my finger resting lightly on the trigger. "Who are you?" I demanded.
The man smiled, a cold, calculating smile. "My name is Victor, and I'm here to collect a debt. A debt you owe me, Lin."
I narrowed my eyes, trying to place the name. Victor...it seemed familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
"You're talking about the files," I said, a sudden realization dawning on me. "You're from the organization that hired Nightshade, aren't you?"
Victor nodded, his eyes glinting with excitement. "That's right, Lin. And I've come to collect the files you stole from me. You see, they're...ah...irreplaceable."
I gritted my teeth, my grip on my gun tightening. "You'll never get them," I snarled.
Victor chuckled, a low, menacing sound. "Oh, I think I will, Lin. You see, I have a...guest waiting for you. Someone who's very interested in seeing you fail."
I spun around, my heart racing with anticipation. Who was this guest, and what did they want from me?
"Who is it?" I demanded, my voice low and deadly.
Victor smiled again, his eyes glinting with amusement. "Ah, but that would be telling, wouldn't it? Let's just say...it's someone who knows you very well, Lin. Someone who's been waiting for this moment for a long, long time."
I felt a chill run down my spine as Victor's words hung in the air, taunting me with the truth. Who could it be? And what did they want from me?
As I stood there, frozen with fear and anticipation, I knew that my world was about to come crashing down around me. And I was powerless to stop it.
To be continued...
