第70章 "Smoke and Deception"
谍影风云
**Chapter 70: "The Web of Revenge"**
I lit another cigarette, my mind still racing with the implications of what I had discovered. The unholy alliance between the two factions was a game-changer, and I knew I had to act fast to prevent it from escalating into something catastrophic.
As I stood there, lost in thought, I was startled by the sound of footsteps behind me. I spun around, my hand instinctively reaching for my gun. But it was just Night Owl, my handler from back home.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral.
"I've been watching you," Night Owl replied, her eyes locked on mine. "You're getting too close to the truth. It's time to get out of here, Lin."
I shook my head. "I've come too far to back down now. Besides, I have a meeting with the leader of the alliance."
Night Owl's expression turned cold. "You're not supposed to be there. You're putting yourself in grave danger."
I took a slow drag on my cigarette, my mind working overtime. "I'm not afraid of danger, Night Owl. I'm afraid of being stuck in the dark, not knowing what's really going on."
Night Owl's eyes narrowed. "You're not thinking clearly, Lin. You're getting too emotional."
I snorted. "Emotional? You're one to talk. You're the one who's been feeding me lies, keeping me in the dark."
Night Owl's face remained impassive. "I'm just trying to protect you, Lin. You're not ready for the truth."
I took a step closer to her. "I'm ready for the truth, Night Owl. And I'm going to get it, no matter what it takes."
Just then, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was the leader of the alliance, his eyes fixed on me with an unnerving intensity.
"Ah, Lin," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "I see you're getting cozy with your handler. That's good. Because I have a special surprise for you."
I raised an eyebrow. "A surprise?"
The leader smiled. "Yes. A surprise that will change everything."
I felt a chill run down my spine as Night Owl grabbed my arm and pulled me aside. "Lin, we have to go," she whispered urgently.
I looked at her, confusion written all over my face. "What's going on, Night Owl?"
But before she could answer, everything went black.
When I came to, I was lying on the wet pavement, my head throbbing with pain. Night Owl was nowhere to be seen, but I could hear the distant sound of sirens.
I struggled to my feet, my mind racing with the implications of what had happened. Who was behind the attack? And what did they want from me?
As I looked around, trying to get my bearings, I saw a piece of paper lying on the ground. It was a note, written in hasty handwriting.
"Meet me at the old warehouse at midnight. Come alone."
I felt a shiver run down my spine as I read the note. Who was behind it, and what did they want from me?
I had to find out. And I had to be ready for anything.
