谍影风云
**Chapter 24: "The Lie Detector"**
My eyes never left Li's as I pressed for answers. "Cut the crap, Li. I'm not here to play games. What do you know about this 'web of deceit'?"
Li's expression remained calm, but I detected a flicker of unease in his gaze. "I'm telling you the truth, Shadow," he said, his voice low and even. "I don't know what you're talking about. This 'web of deceit' is just a metaphor."
I snorted. "Save it for someone who believes in fairy tales. I know you're hiding something."
Li leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together. "Very well, Shadow. If you want to play it this way, let's have a little fun. I'll play along with your game... for now."
My instincts screamed at me to be cautious, but I was determined to get to the bottom of things. "Fine. Let's play. But don't think for a second that I won't expose you if you're lying to me."
Li smiled, a cold, calculating smile. "Oh, I'm not lying, Shadow. At least, not yet. But I will say this: the web of deceit is closer than you think. And you're getting tangled up in it, whether you like it or not."
I felt a shiver run down my spine as Li's words hit home. Was he trying to tell me something, or was he just messing with my head? I decided to push my luck and see how far I could get.
"You're saying that the mole is the one who's been feeding me all these false leads?" I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral.
Li's smile grew wider. "Let's just say that the mole is someone you trust. Someone who's been working with you for a long time."
I felt a punch to the gut as Li's words hit me like a ton of bricks. "Who is it?" I demanded, my voice tight with anger.
Li's expression turned serious. "I'm not at liberty to say, Shadow. But I will say this: you're running out of time. The mole is getting restless, and they're about to make their move."
I felt my mind racing as I tried to process Li's words. Who could the mole be? And what did they want? I knew I had to be careful, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being led down a rabbit hole.
As I sat there, weighing my options, I heard a faint noise outside the room. It was a soft rustling, like someone was trying to sneak past the guards. I turned to Li, my eyes locked on his.
"What's going on?" I asked, my voice low and urgent.
Li's gaze flicked to the door, and for a moment, I thought I saw a glimmer of fear in his eyes. "I don't know," he said, his voice tight. "But I think we're about to find out."
As we heard the door creak open, I felt a sense of unease wash over me. Who was coming, and what did they want? I leaned forward, my heart pounding in my chest, ready to take on whatever lay ahead.
And then, everything went black.
To be continued...
