重生之都市仙尊
**39th Chapter: The Web of Conspiracy**
As the council members began to speak, Lin Qingxue's unease reached a boiling point. Ye Gucheng's calm facade cracked for a moment, revealing a hint of frustration beneath.
"Why are we here, Councilor?" Ye Gucheng asked, his voice dripping with disdain.
"We are here to discuss a matter of great importance," the councilor replied, his eyes gleaming with calculation. "A matter that concerns the future of our society."
Lin Qingxue's instincts screamed at her to leave, but she remained frozen, her eyes fixed on Ye Gucheng's tense face.
"What is it?" Ye Gucheng demanded, his voice growing sharper.
The councilor leaned forward, his voice taking on a sinister tone. "We have reason to believe that you, Ye Gucheng, are not who you claim to be."
Ye Gucheng's expression didn't change, but Lin Qingxue saw a flicker of anger in his eyes.
"Prove it," he said, his voice devoid of emotion.
The councilor smiled, a cold, calculated smile. "We have evidence, Ye Gucheng. Evidence that suggests you are, in fact, the reincarnation of...the Demon King."
Lin Qingxue's eyes widened as Ye Gucheng's face turned ice-cold. "You're lying," he spat, his words dripping with venom.
The councilor chuckled, a dry, mirthless sound. "Oh, no, Ye Gucheng. I'm afraid the truth is out. You see, we've been watching you. Studying you. And we've discovered something...disturbing."
Ye Gucheng's eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing. "What are you trying to say?"
The councilor leaned back in his chair, his smile growing wider. "We're saying that you, Ye Gucheng, are a danger to our society. A threat to our very existence."
Lin Qingxue felt a chill run down her spine as Ye Gucheng's face contorted with rage. "You're making a grave mistake," he growled, his voice low and menacing.
The councilor's smile never wavered. "Oh, we're not making a mistake, Ye Gucheng. We're making a necessary decision. One that will ensure the survival of our society."
As the council members began to murmur among themselves, Lin Qingxue felt a sense of foreboding wash over her. She knew that Ye Gucheng was not one to be underestimated, and she couldn't shake off the feeling that they were walking into a trap.
And then, just as she thought she saw a glimmer of hope, the lights in the boardroom flickered and died, plunging them into darkness.
